Two lab-grown diamonds can have similar specifications yet look different beside each other. One may appear brighter through the centre; the other may have a shape you prefer. The letters describing their growth method will not, on their own, explain which deserves your money.

Start with the distinction between growing a crystal and assessing the polished stone.
Two growth methods, the same diamond material
HPHT means high pressure, high temperature. It grows diamond under conditions involving intense pressure and heat.
CVD means chemical vapour deposition. It uses a carbon-containing gas inside a chamber, where carbon builds onto a diamond seed. The growth conditions differ, but both processes produce crystalline diamond rather than an imitation such as cubic zirconia.
GIA explains that laboratory-grown diamonds have essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamonds. Specialist testing can identify differences associated with their origin and growth. Looking at a finished ring without instruments cannot reliably establish its production method. For a buyer, this means that “CVD” and “HPHT” describe production history. They are not quality grades.
Growth and treatment are separate questions
A potentially confusing detail is that HPHT can describe both a growth process and a treatment applied after growth.
A diamond may be grown using CVD and subsequently receive HPHT treatment to improve its colour. Calling it “CVD-grown” describes its origin correctly, but does not answer whether additional treatment occurred.
Ask two separate questions:
- Which method was used to grow this diamond?
- What post-growth treatment, if any, is disclosed?

Compare the diamonds under matching conditions
The fairest comparison lab grown diamonds with similar shape, dimensions and grading information. Comparing a round HPHT stone with an elongated CVD oval tells you little about the influence of growth method.
Use this shortlist when reviewing two candidates:

Avoid comparing one diamond filmed beneath intense spotlights with another photographed in soft daylight. Ask for both in the same environment, ideally moving through several angles.
Magnification also needs context. An inclusion that dominates a close-up video may be difficult to see at normal viewing distance. Ask the jeweller to describe its visibility without magnification, including where it sits within the stone.
Let the intended shape set your priorities
Once you have established origin and treatment information, focus on the shape you actually plan to wear.
For a round brilliant, examine cut information and the balance of brightness across the face. Do not assume an impressive clarity description compensates for an appearance you find dull.
With an oval, inspect the central bow-tie: the darker band that can cross its middle. Watch the diamond move. Does that area brighten as the angle changes, or remain visually dominant? A growth-method label cannot answer this.
For an emerald cut, pay attention to the broad, open facets. Request a clear view through the centre and decide whether visible inclusions distract you.
Measurements deserve equal attention. Two diamonds with the same carat weight can differ in face-up dimensions. If you want more finger coverage, compare millimetres before paying for additional weight.
A price difference needs a specific explanation
If one candidate costs more, ask the seller to identify what accounts for the difference.
Possible comparison points include dimensions, colour, clarity, cut, treatment disclosure and the accompanying service. Request an explanation tied to the actual diamonds rather than a blanket claim that one growth method is superior.
A useful question is: “What visible or documented advantage am I receiving for this extra cost?”
Keep environmental claims separate from quality claims, too. Neither production label alone establishes the energy source, emissions or working conditions behind a particular diamond. If those factors influence your purchase, ask for evidence relevant to its producer.
